NeuroStar TMS Therapy is emerging as a groundbreaking treatment for mental health conditions like depression with or without anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). As an FDA-cleared, non-invasive option, TMS can be a miracle treatment for those who have not had success with other methods.

While NeuroStar TMS is clinically proven to be highly effective, immediate relief is not guaranteed. As with most other depression management options, results will be felt with time. We want to help you in understanding the TMS timeline so that you form realistic expectations for your treatment.

How Long Are TMS Sessions?

Each NeuroStar TMS therapy session will take less than 20 minutes. Because TMS does not require anesthesia or sedation, you can continue normal activities immediately after your session. While TMS does require some time commitment in terms of making it to each session, the quick duration and lack of required downtime make it a popular option for those with busy schedules.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Before scheduling TMS sessions, you will meet with our qualified medical team. At this initial consultation, we will ask you questions about your medical history, current state of health, and goals for treatment. Be sure to tell us about any medications or recreational drugs you currently use to ensure your safety throughout treatments.

After getting a sense of your unique story and needs, we will create an individualized care plan for you. At Genesis, we want you to feel comfortable and confident with the care you are receiving. We welcome you to ask questions and address any concerns you may have regarding the TMS process and timeline.

The number of sessions you will need depends on several factors, including your medical history, individual needs, and response to treatment. Most people receive TMS five times a week for about seven weeks. The recommended total treatment is typically around 36 sessions.

We understand the TMS process can be a big commitment, so our team works with your schedule to find time to prioritize your mental health. Please let us know if there is any way we can help ease any scheduling concerns you may have.

When Will I See Results?

The time period when people begin to notice an improvement in symptoms from TMS will vary for everyone. While some may experience a lift in mood after the very first session, it is more common for people to feel gradual relief as treatments continue. The majority of individuals should notice improvement by 10-15 sessions.

Throughout your treatment process, it is important to monitor your mood and any side effects you may be experiencing. Communicate with your provider regarding mental and physical changes you notice so we can ensure your safety and optimal results.

How Long Do The Results Last?

Most people report significant improvement in mood for several months up to 12 months (Dunner DL, et al. (2014). J Clin Psychiatry, 75(12):1394-1401.)  after completing their TMS sessions. If you start to feel like the effects of your TMS treatments are wearing off, speak to our team about scheduling an additional session.

Several factors can influence how long TMS treatment results may last, including lifestyle choices, such as the use of drugs and alcohol, certain medications, social and psychotherapeutic support, and additional health conditions. Receiving regular follow-up care is vital to a successful outcome.
