NeuroStar transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy can be an effective treatment if you seek a solution for mental health issues and have not found relief with other methods. It is a non-invasive procedure that is safe and generally well-tolerated, but you may still be asking if TMS therapy is uncomfortable. Let our compassionate Genesis TMS staff answer your questions and guide you through every step of the process.

Do NeuroStar Treatments Hurt?

Some clients have concerns that NeuroStar TMS treatments will hurt, but for the majority of patients, your TMS sessions are well-tolerated. You may feel mild discomfort at the treatment site; but this typically resolves quickly and decreases with subsequent sessions. This innovative, non-invasive technology works by having magnetic fields stimulate nerve cells in regions of the brain involved in mood control.

Are There Side Effects?

Side effects of medication treatments can make it difficult to balance your mental and physical health. Two of the most appealing characteristics of NeuroStar TMS therapy are that it is generally well-tolerated and does not have the long list of potential side effects associated with medications.

The side effects you may experience from TMS sessions include dizziness, headaches, facial tingling, or scalp discomfort during or immediately after your treatments. These symptoms are typically mild, will resolve quickly, and decrease with subsequent sessions.

Are There Risks?

NeuroStar TMS is FDA-cleared for treating major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and reducing anxiety secondary to depression. It is considered a generally safe option for mental health management.

As with any medical treatment, there are a few risks to be aware of. TMS treatments are not suitable for anyone with magnetic implants, such as cochlear implants, a pacemaker, or aneurysm clips. The magnetic waves administered during treatment could cause these devices to move, disrupting their function or causing harm within the body.

NeuroStar TMS therapy also has a minimal potential to cause seizures. While this risk is extremely low, disclosing your full medical history to our Genesis team is essential to ensure your safety during treatments.

What Can I Expect During Treatments?

Your NeuroStar TMS treatments will take place at our outpatient office. One of our knowledgeable team members will guide you to your treatment room, provide earplugs to wear during your session, and ensure you feel comfortable and ready for the process.

One of our clinical staff will position magnetic coils against your scalp. At your first appointment, we may get some measurements to determine where to place these coils for optimal stimulation. You will be awake for the duration of your TMS therapy, and you can sit back and relax during this generally comfortable procedure. Some patients even enjoy engaging in meditation during their treatment. You may feel light sensations of tapping, tingling, and warmth when the session begins. You should not feel any pain beyond minimal and tolerable discomfort—if you do, please let our care team know immediately. We will make any necessary adjustments to ensure your comfort.

Your NeuroStar TMS appointment should take around 30 minutes from start to finish, making it easy to work into your schedule. There is no downtime after the procedure, and you can return to regular activities immediately, including driving yourself home or back to work.
