At Genesis TMS and Wellness, our mission is to provide every patient with the highest quality care. We want to empower you to successfully manage your career, relationship, family life, and faith by staying in control of your mental health.

A big part of maintaining control is being comfortable and confident with the care you are receiving. We want to provide you with all the information you need to understand your treatments, including their benefits, the safety and side effects, and any possible risks. Here is an outline of the pros and cons of TMS Therapy at Genesis.

TMS Therapy Is Effective

TMS therapy, or transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy, is clinically proven to be highly effective in the treatment of major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depression with comorbid anxiety. Based on available research, TMS therapy has a strong success rate for treating depression. Genesis TMS and Wellness uses NeuroStar Advanced Therapy for TMS, and according to specific studies using the NeuroStar system, 83 percent of patients experienced significant improvement in their depressive symptoms, and 62 percent achieved full remission(Sackeim HA, et al. (2020). J Affect Disord, 277:65 74. Based on a real-world, retrospective study using CGI-S and a sample size of 615 patients).

TMS Therapy Fits Into Your Daily Routine

Another “pro” to TMS Therapy is it is a non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical treatment for depression that requires no post-session downtime. It is performed at an outpatient facility and does not require sedation or anesthesia. You will remain awake as small magnetic coils are positioned lightly against your head. You may feel sensations of tapping, tingling, or warming, which will resolve after treatment and typically decreases with subsequent sessions.

The recommended treatment course for TMS is typically five days a week for seven weeks, and the sessions take about 20 minutes. This means they can fit within your regular daily routine, and you can return to normal activities immediately after your procedure.

Cons of TMS Therapy

As with many other treatments like medication, TMS therapy can cause some side effects, including headaches, dizziness, scalp discomfort, and facial tingling. Such cases are typically mild, temporary, and decrease as you continue sessions. In general, TMS therapy has minimal side effects.

Additionally, certain devices and substances can interfere with TMS therapy. If you have metal or magnetic implants in your body, such as a pacemaker, stent, or aneurysm clip, let our team know at your initial consultation.

Substances such as alcohol and recreational or prescription drugs can also limit the effectiveness of TMS therapy. Talk to your provider about any current medications, and inform us of any recreational drug use. If deemed safe for your health, we may recommend discontinuing some of these substances prior to your sessions.

While many clients find it easy to make time for TMS therapy in their schedule, for others this can be more challenging. Our qualified team understands that it can be difficult to prioritize your mental health when faced with daily responsibilities and deadlines. For this reason, we offer flexible treatment times to work with your schedule.
